Explanation of the steps carried out in the setup of a resonator guitar cone and spider assembly.  This is carried out as part of the free setup offered with guitars sold at Justecordes .  Complete resonator setups are available in the workshop.

Une explication sur les étapes du réglage d’une guitare reso (cone et spider) . Ce réglage fait parti des services inclus sur les guitares vendues chez Justecordes. Il y a aussi possibilité de faire effectuer un réglage a l’atelier…

Cover plate is off, exposing the cone and spider assembly.  The cone works like a mechanical loudspeaker.

Le couvercle enlevé, on découvre le cone et le système “spider’. Le cone agit comme un haut parleur mécanique.

Tapping around the assembly with a felt hammer shows up some problems, the tone is uneven around the cone and is a little muffled. The guitar is currently compromised in tone and volume but we can fix it  !

En tapant tout le tour  avec  un feutre, on découvre les problèmes, la tonalité est désequilibré autour du cone et le son est un peu étouffé. Cela compromet le son et volume de l’instrument,  mais c’est réparable!

The spider is rough cast aluminium ….Le spider est en fonte d’aluminium brute.

…. and the feet of the spider sit on the rim of the cone.  The indentations show that they are not contacting properly – the foot of the spider is twisted.

..et les pieds du spider repose sur le rebord du cone, ici on voit par les marques que le contact n’est pas correct, le pied a reposé de travers.

The spider is rocked on a flat surface to find any mis-aligned legs, and then carefully adjusted with a hammer until all the feet touch the flat surface.

On teste le spider sur une surface plate pour identifier les misalignements, et ensuite un ajustage léger au marteau jusqu’à tout soit reposé sur la surface.

The feet are then sanded flat to ensure proper contact with the cone.

Les bases sont limées pour les applanir en assurer un bon contact avec le cone.

Another problem here is that the soundwell is misaligned within the body of the guitar.

This means that the edge of the soundwell actually touches the “active” part of the cone – muffling the sound.  It is now clearenced so the cone can sit in the correct position and is free to vibrate.

The shelf upon which the cone sits also needs to be flat so any bumps are removed. The plywood of the soundwell has also delaminated so this is filled with glue and scraped flat.

Un autre souci ici est que l’ouverture du soundwell n’est pas alignée avec le corps de la guitare.

Ce qui signifie que les bords touchent la parti “active du cone”, etouffant le son. On l’élargit pour que le cone puisse etre en position correcte et vibrer librement.

Le rebord ou repose le cone doit aussi etre applani et le placage recollé ou nécessaire.

To find the proper position of the cone, it is rotated and tapped with the felt hammer until the tone is full and even around the whole assembly.

Pour trouver la position optimale, on pivote le tout en testant à chaque fois pour trouver le meilleur son.

Coverplate back on and now restrung, the cone tension is adjusted for opimum tone – a big improvement !

On referme le couvercle, pose les cordes et la tension est ajustée avec la vis pour une tonalité optimum, l’amélioration est claire!
