Ukulélé custom pour l’ukulélé boudoir – par étapes
Cette année j’ai souhaité offrir une lot plus personnel pour la tombola du Festival Ukulélé Boudoir, comme je n’avais pas le temps de construire un instrument complet, l’idée a été de customiser un ukulélé electrique du commerce.
En prenant un peu d’inpiration des Telecasters Fender japonaises décorées avec de la soie de Kimono, et d’un morceau de tissu qu’il restait après la couture de ma chemise Hawaiienne….
I wanted to make something special for the Ukulele Boudoir tombola this year, but having no time to build an instrument from scratch, I’m customising an off-the-shelf electric ukulele.
Taking inspiration from fender’s japanese made kimono silk covered telecasters and some left over material from my hawaiian shirt …
Uke dismantled and primed in white to make sure the colours in the fabric stay bright under the lacquer.
L’instrument est démonté et couvert d’une sous couche blanche qui permet aux couleur du tissu de mieux resortir sous le vernis.
The idea is to glue the fabric down to the body and bury it in lacquer. It is stuck down onto a first coat of grain filler and left to dry hard.
L’idée est de coller le tissu et ensuite de le recouvrir de vernis. IL est coller à une couche de bouche pore et on le laisse sécher.
Once dry the fabric is hard it can be trimmed to shape and then the edges sanded down smooth with the sides.
Une fois que le tissu est sec et durci, on pour le couper à la bonne forme et poncer sur les cotés.
Both the front and the back get the same treatment.

The sides are then painted blue to match the background colour of the fabric, and the whole body is then sprayed with multiple coats of lacquer. The headstock is rubbed down and painted blue too.
Les cotés sont peints en bleu assorti au tissu, et ensuite on vernis le tout avec de nombreuses couches de vernis. La tête est aussi peinte en bleue.
After 24 hours the lacquer is wet sanded to flatten it off. After this, I spray with a few more coats and sand back again, I’m not looking to completely bury the fabric in a thick coat of glassy lacquer – I still want the grain of the fabric to show through a little – so I’ll stop here. The body and headstock then gets the final top coats sprayed on.
Après 24 heures on peu faire un poncage à l’eau pour aplanir le tout, et ensuite encore qq couches de vernis et de ponçage. je ne recherche pas a avoir une épaisseur de vernis très epaisse, je m’arrête quand le tissage reste un peu visible…
The final lacquer coats need a week to harden off before final polish and assembly – I’ll update then !
La couche finale doit être laissé une semaine pour durcir avant le remontage – la suite dans une semaine !
